Kids can log onto the educational website Math Playground to learn new mathematical concepts, visualize word problems, and practice their math skills.

The Math Playground is an interactive math based website for upper elementary and middle school aged students. The website was developed in 2002 by a math teacher who was looking for a fun way for her students to practice math facts. Math Playground is broken into sections such as Math Games, Word Problems, and Logic Puzzles that feature fun, action-packed learning activities for kids.

The Math Playground Math Website in the Classroom

The Math Playground is more than just math games for kids and has a lot of classroom implications. Elementary teachers can use the Thinking Blocks section of the math website to help teach students to visualize and map out math problems. Kids manipulate the online colored blocks to learn how to correctly set up a number sentence based on a word problem. The online math tutor feature guides and prompts the students to ensure success. After correctly setting up and solving the problem online teachers can have students write about the process in their math journals.

The Math Worksheets section of Math Playground is a tool useful tool that allows teachers and parents to create and customize their own math practice worksheets. Teachers can generate arithmetic, time, and money extra practice worksheets as well as multiplication charts to accompany their classroom lessons. There are also premade math worksheets for students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade covering a variety of standard math topics.

The Multi-Player Learning Games section of the Math Playground website can be used as a computer based math learning center. The teacher chooses a game from the website that helps the students practice addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, or ratio, fraction, and integer math concepts. The students a the center can then play against each other in fun games such as Meteor Multiplication or Dirt Bike Proportions. The teacher can group the students in the center by interest for enrichment or by ability for focused practice.

Kids who like to play video and computer games will enjoy the Math Playground. Parents can add the Math Playground to their family’s list of approved websites. Instead of mindless screen time kids will be learning math facts and concepts while having fun. Parents can even use time on the Math Playground website as a reward for good behavior at home.

Students who are struggling or need extra practice during math class can log onto the Math Playground to build their math skills. Parents can use the different sections of the website to help explain math concepts to students. Kids who do not understand how to complete their math homework benefit from being able to visualize the problem in on the screen.

The Math Playground is a comprehensive math website for elementary and middle school students. The fun, interactive math games and learning activities on the site provide teachers and parents with a variety ways to help kids learn math concepts. Teachers can use the Math Playground in their classrooms as a teaching tool and a learning center activity.
