Kindergarten teachers can teach students to identify, write and say the letter G and the color green by planting and growing grass as part of an LEA.

Kindergarten students need to be able to identify, write, and say the letters of the alphabet and to automatically read color words. Teachers can plant and grow grass seed with students to teach them the letter G, the G sound, the color green, and which colors make green. The students write about their seed planting experience during a Language Experience Approach activity and practice reading G words using their story.

Teach Kindergarten Kids the Color Green and Letter G

The kindergarten teacher introduces the color green by reviewing the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. She explains to the students that these primary color can be mixed together to make new colors. The teacher shows the students blue paint and yellow paint. She puts some of each color in a clear bowl and shows them how they combine to produce green paint.

The teacher asks the kindergarten students what letter sound they hear at the beginning of the word green. She writes the word green on the front board for them to see. The teacher gives each of the kids some green paint and instructs them to paint something green on a piece of paper. While they are painting they discuss the letter G sound and talk about other things that start with that sound. The teacher assists the students in labeling their green drawings and correctly writing the letter G.

Plant and Grow Grass Seeds With Kids

The kindergarten teacher writes the words green grass on the front board and asks the students to identify the letter at the beginning of each word. The class talks about the letter G and its sound. The teacher tells the students that they are going to plant green grass seeds and watch them grow.

The teacher passes out plastic cups, grass seed, dirt, and spoons to the students. The kindergarteners follow the teacher’s instructions to plant and water the green grass seeds. The teacher labels the cups and places them in a sunlit area. The students observe the growth of the grass and record their observations in a science journal.

Seed Planting Language Experience Approach

After the students have planted their seeds, the teacher tells them that they are going to write a story about planting the green grass seeds. She uses the Language Experience Approach Strategy to write the words the students dictate to her about planting the seeds on chart paper. During a Language Experience Approach the teacher records the students’ sentences word for word modeling proper punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

The kindergarten teacher uses the students’ story as the basis for reading and phonics lessons. Students can practice identifying the uppercase and lowercase letter G in the story and recognize and read G words and the color word green. Repeated readings of the green grass seed LEA by the students increase their ability to decode and comprehend text.

After learning about the letter G and the color green students may be ready to complete lessons and activities for the letter A, the letter E, and the letter O.
